(Maurits van der Plas together with Pradeep Dhanda and Ricado **** at Business Analysis UK 2019 conference hosted by IRM UK).
About the event
September 23 – September 25, 2019 London, United Kindom.
The IRM UK is the largest Business Analysis conference in Europe, and they recently held their 11thedition of this annual event.
Van Haren was represented by Maurits van der Plas (Director Learning Solutions) to get a feel of how this crowd compares to those at other events. They were also on hand to show off which Global Standards and Publications Van Haren Publishing & Learning Solutions represents.
According to Maurits van der Plas, it is worth mentioning the type of crowd in attendance at the event. The attendees were very interactive and interested. It was also clear that business analysis professionals have a broad knowledge and a keen interest to learn. They asked a lot of questions and were eager to see how they could further improve their knowledge.
According to one of the event organizers Shane McGlynn, about 80% were from the United Kingdom. He mentioned that other events usually have way more international attendees. In contrast, Maurits van der Plas personally had lots of contact with other attendees from China, US, the rest of Europe, and even the Middle East. Overall, a good mix of cultures was present that day. All keen to share their interests and personal experiences. There was really a great sense of community that day.
Who was there?
The main certifications in the business analysis industry at the moment are those from BCS and IIBA. Both organizations were present at the conference. Additionally, there were training, tooling and consultancy organizations represented who were keen on advertising their skills.
The speakers at the event were of top quality; some even receiving standing ovations! Something which is not common in the UK, in our experience. There was also a wide variety of speakers so several domains relevant to business analysis were covered.
What did we do?
Van Haren Publishing went to the event to gain better exposure, especially since those attending the event are within our market segment. With all the digital development within industries, different domains like Data Management, Enterprise Architecture, Business Architecture are collaborating more often with one another. Van Haren Publishing wanted to position itself better to expose our brand and publications. The overall feedback so far has been great, and the business analysis professionals really embraced us!
Van Haren Publishing has already released publications in Business Analysis with Business Analysis Based on BABOK® Guide Version 2 – A Pocket Guide. Even though IIBA now has a version 3 of the BABOK®, the pocket guide is still very relative as it’s so comprehensive and provides a great alternative for the big BABOK®.
As mentioned, there was also great interest in our other subjects such as ITIL® 4 PRINCE2®, Agile, Scrum, DevOps, TOGAF®, TOGAF for Business. There was also specific interest from banking representatives in BIAN business architecture for the financial service industry.
What did we notice?
Highlights of the event were the variety of people there who clearly showed a strong interest in everything. Everyone actively participated, and all agreed that the event was a success!
Also, huge compliments to the organization. Special thanks to Shane McGlynnand all his colleagues for doing an amazing job putting everything together. Everything was spot on and we’ll definitely keep in touch!
